Former NYPD officer sentenced to prison for causing wrong-way fatal crash

NEW YORK – A former sergeant with the New York City Police Department was sentenced on Wednesday to four to 12 years in state prison in connection with a wrong-way fatal crash on the Taconic State Parkway in Westchester County, State Attorney General Letitia James reported. Tiffany Howell, 48, of Warwick was speeding south in the northbound lanes at about 11:40 p.m. on January 22 with a blood alcohol content of at least 0.18 percent when she ran into a car driven by Manuel Boitel. He died in the crash. Howell pled guilty in August to aggravated vehicular homicide and manslaughter. She was sentenced to concurrent sentences in prison. Her driver’s license has been revoked and she has waived her right to appeal. State law requires that every incident involving a police or peace officer, including a corrections officer, where the individual may have caused a death, will be investigated by the State Attorney General’s Office.
